THEY HAVE A HOME AGAIN….
By bethsmoot on August 27th, 2010
Ronald and Deborah became homeless after they were laid off from their jobs and became unable to sustain a home. Deborah found housing at The Helen Wright Center for Women and Ronald stayed at the Wilmington Street shelter for men. They soon learned about Step Up Ministries and enrolled in their jobs program where they were able to find steady employment. After participating in Step Up’s life skills program for the past 2 months, they have been able to afford their own apartment where they can live together and finally have a home again….and The Green Chair Project helped provide them with an affordable way to furnish it with much-needed essentials. Deborah was so thrilled when she saw the kitchen table picked out for them: She told us that she had always envisioned a glass top table when they finally got in a new space and that is exactly what we had for them. Ronald was especially thrilled with the recliner he can now claim as his own chair. Their smiles were beaming as they talked about how they would finally have a bed to sleep in and a table to eat at together. Ronald and Deborah have worked hard to overcome the adversity they have faced. After coming so far, having to come up with all they need to furnish their apartment was overwhelming. Fortunately for Ronald and Deborah, they were eligible to be among the first participants in Step Up’s partnership with the Green Chair Project.
Each of the pieces of furniture that they received had stories too…..a recliner that had just been donated by a woman whose mother had just passed away and she wanted a worthwhile place for it to go…a dresser from a family whose father had just been moved to a nursing home. Sometimes it’s so hard to part with things that we have a history with and that almost seem like part of the family. But somehow, just knowing that it becomes a treasure to someone who might otherwise be without, makes it just a little easier to let go of.
